Valentine Moreno has been chosen from among five finalists for the coveted position of
Venice Apprentice. Over one hundred applicants competed to assist the gallery in its preparations for
Canada’s official presentation of artist Mark Lewis at La Biennale di Venezia 2009. Over the period of one
month, the candidates worked in the fast-paced, multi-level preparations for Mark Lewis’ new project for
the Canada Pavilion at world’s oldest and most prestigious biennale of contemporary art.
According to Commissioner Barbara Fischer and Deputy Commissioner Natalie de Vito, “The short-listed
apprentices were extraordinary; their work was essential to the many aspects of a challenging and
ambitious project. We would have liked to offer all of them the opportunity to travel to Venice. Valentine
Moreno distinguished herself through boundless energy, enthusiasm, and a great sense of foresight and
unusual commitment. She will be a critical member of a tightly-knit team at the Biennale.”
